Judgment by default

A court judgment entered against a defendant who has failed to appear in court or respond to a lawsuit within the prescribed time limits. This occurs when the defendant does not contest the plaintiff's claims, allowing the plaintiff to win without a trial. The plaintiff must still prove the amount of damages in many jurisdictions.
