An individual who has achieved widespread notoriety or voluntarily injected themselves into a public controversy, thereby having a reduced expectation of privacy. In defamation lawsuits, public figures must prove that a defamatory statement was made with actual malice, meaning with knowledge of its falsity or reckless disregard for the truth. This standard is higher than for private individuals.
