Public necessity

A legal defense or justification for actions that would otherwise be unlawful, based on the need to prevent a greater harm to the community or public interest. This principle allows for the temporary infringement of private rights or property when an immediate and overriding public danger exists. For instance, emergency services may damage private property to contain a fire, invoking this doctrine.
