A Real Estate Investment Trust, which is a company that owns, operates, or finances income-producing real estate. REITs allow individual investors to buy shares in commercial real estate portfolios, similar to how they invest in other industries through stocks. To qualify as a REIT, a company must distribute at least 90% of its taxable income to shareholders annually.
