The delivery of legal notice to a defendant by publishing a summons or other legal document in a newspaper or other public medium. This method is employed when a defendant's whereabouts are unknown and personal service is impracticable, after diligent efforts to locate them have failed. It is often used in cases involving real property or divorce where the defendant cannot be found.
