The formal delivery of legal documents, such as a summons, complaint, or subpoena, to an opposing party or witness in a lawsuit. This process provides official notice of the legal action and an opportunity to respond. Proper service is a prerequisite for a court to exercise personal jurisdiction over a defendant.
