Severance

The division of a single lawsuit into two or more separate actions, or the separation of multiple defendants or claims for individual trials. A court orders severance to prevent prejudice to a party, avoid jury confusion, or promote judicial efficiency when claims or parties are not closely related. This procedural motion is governed by rules such as Rule 21 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
