Aquitard
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003595
A geological formation that is saturated and transmits water at a very slow rate, acting as a semi-confining layer. It allows some leakage of water between adjacent aquifers, but its hydraulic conductivity is significantly lower than that of an aquifer. Shales and silty clays often function as aquitards.
