Atmospheric pressure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000222

  1. The force exerted by the weight of the air column above a given point on the Earth's surface. This pressure decreases with increasing altitude and is a fundamental meteorological variable influencing weather patterns. It is commonly measured in hectopascals (hPa) or millibars (mb), with an average sea-level value of 1013.25 hPa.

  2. The pressure exerted by the earth's atmosphere at any given point, determined by taking the product of the gravitational acceleration at the point and the mass of the unit area column of air above the point.
