Bimetallic strip
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003909
A temperature-sensitive element constructed from two different metals bonded together, each possessing a distinct coefficient of thermal expansion. As temperature changes, the differing expansion rates cause the strip to bend, with the metal having the higher expansion coefficient on the outside of the curve. This mechanical deflection is used in thermostats and some older thermometers to indicate or regulate temperature.
