Bimetallic thermometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003910
A temperature-measuring device constructed from two strips of different metals, such as steel and copper, bonded together. Because the metals have different coefficients of thermal expansion, the strip bends or coils when heated or cooled. This mechanical movement is translated to a pointer on a calibrated dial to indicate the temperature, and this design is common in thermographs.
