Mercury-in-steel thermometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010609
A type of thermometer that measures temperature by the expansion and contraction of mercury contained within a steel bulb and capillary tube. The change in volume of the mercury exerts pressure on a Bourdon tube, which is connected to a pointer on a calibrated scale. These instruments are known for their accuracy and durability in industrial and meteorological applications, often used for recording maximum and minimum temperatures.
