Spirit thermometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009147
A type of liquid-in-glass thermometer that uses a sealed glass tube containing a colored alcohol, such as ethanol or toluene, as the temperature-sensing fluid. As temperature increases, the liquid expands and rises up the narrow bore of the tube, indicating the temperature on a calibrated scale. Unlike mercury thermometers, spirit thermometers can measure much lower temperatures, with some functioning down to -70 °C (-94 °F).
