Six's thermometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008909

A U-shaped glass tube containing mercury and alcohol, designed to show the highest and lowest temperatures attained since its last setting. As temperature changes, the expansion and contraction of alcohol in a sealed bulb pushes or pulls a column of mercury, which in turn moves two small steel markers, or indices. The indices remain at the furthest point reached by the mercury on each arm of the tube, indicating the maximum and minimum temperatures, and are reset with a magnet.
