Size parameter

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008910

A dimensionless quantity used in scattering theory, defined as 2πr/λ, where 'r' is the radius of a scattering particle and 'λ' is the wavelength of the incident radiation. This parameter determines the scattering regime (Rayleigh, Mie, or geometric optics) for atmospheric particles like aerosols and cloud droplets. It dictates how light interacts with particles of different sizes.
