A sudden, violent, and cold squall accompanied by rain or hail, specific to the Lake Geneva region of Switzerland and France. This local wind phenomenon is a downdraft that descends from a thunderstorm over the nearby Jura Mountains, spreading out over the lake with great force. The name, derived from French, likens the sharp, stinging precipitation to the fire of carbine rifles.
