Carbon budget
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004159
A balance sheet of carbon exchanges between sources, such as emissions, and sinks, such as uptake, within a defined system like the global atmosphere or a nation. It quantifies the amount of carbon that can be emitted over a period while remaining within a specific temperature target, like the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. The global carbon budget tracks fluxes from fossil fuel combustion, land-use change, and natural processes in the oceans and on land.
