Cloud shield

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004444

A large, contiguous expanse of middle and high-level clouds, primarily cirrostratus and altostratus, that precedes a warm front or is associated with a large-scale weather system. This feature appears on satellite imagery as a cohesive, bright white area. The cloud shield of a mature mid-latitude cyclone can extend for hundreds of kilometers, obscuring the underlying low-level cloud structures.
