Cryoconite hole
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004780
A small, water-filled depression on the surface of a glacier or ice sheet, formed by the melting of ice around dark, wind-blown dust and debris. These holes absorb solar radiation more efficiently than the surrounding ice, leading to localized melting and the creation of a unique microhabitat. Cryoconite holes are often colonized by microorganisms and can influence the overall albedo of glacial surfaces.
