Cyclonette

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004831

A small-scale, short-lived cyclonic circulation that forms along a frontal boundary or in a shear zone. These mesoscale vortices are much smaller than synoptic-scale cyclones, having diameters on the order of tens of kilometers. They can be associated with localized areas of enhanced precipitation, strong winds, and turbulence, and are sometimes precursors to tornadogenesis within a larger storm system.
