Filtering approximations

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005575

Mathematical techniques applied to atmospheric equations to remove high-frequency, non-meteorological waves, such as sound waves and gravity waves, which are not relevant to large-scale weather prediction. These approximations simplify the governing equations, making them more computationally tractable for numerical weather models. The geostrophic approximation is a common example, filtering out fast-moving oscillations.
