Fractal

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005746

A geometric shape or pattern that exhibits self-similarity, meaning its smaller parts resemble the whole structure at different scales of magnification. In atmospheric science, this concept is applied to model complex, irregular natural phenomena that lack a characteristic length scale. The shapes of clouds, coastlines, lightning paths, and patterns of turbulence all display fractal characteristics.
