Subgrid-scale process

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009342

Atmospheric or oceanic phenomena that occur at spatial scales smaller than the resolution of a numerical model's grid. These processes, such as turbulence, convection, or cloud microphysics, cannot be explicitly resolved by the model. Their effects must be represented through parameterization schemes to accurately simulate larger-scale dynamics.
