Negative viscosity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007495

A theoretical concept where a fluid flow exhibits an apparent transfer of kinetic energy from smaller scales of motion to larger scales. Unlike normal viscosity, which dissipates energy, negative viscosity would amplify large-scale flows. This phenomenon is sometimes invoked in theories of atmospheric and oceanic turbulence, particularly in two-dimensional flows.
