Cascade of energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004188
The process in turbulent fluid flows where kinetic energy is transferred from larger eddies to progressively smaller eddies until it is dissipated into heat by molecular viscosity. This concept is central to understanding atmospheric turbulence and the dynamics of atmospheric boundary layers. It describes how energy introduced at large scales, such as by large-scale atmospheric motions, eventually breaks down.
