Fraunhofer lines
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005750
Dark absorption lines observed in the spectrum of the sun and other stars, caused by the absorption of specific wavelengths of light by cooler gases in their outer atmospheres. These lines correspond to particular chemical elements, providing information about the composition of stellar atmospheres. The strongest Fraunhofer lines are designated by letters, such as the D-lines for sodium.
