Hardpan

A dense, compacted, and often cemented layer of soil that is resistant to penetration by roots and water. This layer can form due to the accumulation of clay, iron oxides, or other cementing agents, restricting drainage and plant growth. In some regions, it can influence surface runoff and local hydrology.
