Height analysis method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010534

A fundamental technique in synoptic meteorology for analyzing atmospheric structure by mapping the geopotential height of a constant pressure surface. Meteorologists plot and contour height values from radiosonde observations to create an upper-air chart, revealing patterns such as troughs and ridges. This analysis of the pressure surface's topography is used to identify and track upper-level weather systems, like the longwaves that steer surface cyclones.
