Indicated altitude

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006500

The altitude directly read from an aircraft's altimeter, which is a pressure-sensing instrument. This reading is based on the assumption of a standard atmosphere and is not corrected for variations in local atmospheric pressure or temperature. Pilots must apply corrections to the indicated altitude to obtain true altitude or pressure altitude for navigation and air traffic control purposes.
