Interleaving

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006593

The vertical stacking of thin, alternating layers of water with different properties, such as temperature and salinity, often observed at oceanic fronts or where distinct water masses meet. This process creates a fine-scale vertical structure of intrusions, where one water type slides between or over layers of another. Interleaving is a mechanism for mixing and heat or salt transport across frontal boundaries in the ocean, which has implications for air-sea interaction.
