Magmatic water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010593

Water that is dissolved within molten rock or magma located beneath the Earth's surface. This water is released into the atmosphere as steam during volcanic eruptions or hydrothermal activity when the magma cools and crystallizes, or when pressure decreases. Unlike meteoric water, which originates from precipitation, magmatic water has not been part of the Earth's hydrosphere for a very long time.
