Molecular-scale temperature

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007388

A temperature scale used in standard-atmosphere calculations, defined as the kinetic temperature multiplied by the ratio of the sea-level mean molecular weight of air to the local mean molecular weight. It equals the true kinetic temperature while air composition is uniform, up to about 80 kilometers. Because the mean molecular weight falls above that height as molecules dissociate, the molecular-scale temperature there exceeds the kinetic temperature.
