Homopause

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006269

The atmospheric boundary layer located at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers, marking the transition between the homosphere and the heterosphere. Below this level, atmospheric gases are well-mixed and maintain a relatively constant composition due to turbulent diffusion. Above the homopause, molecular diffusion dominates, leading to a stratification of gases by molecular weight, with lighter gases becoming more prevalent at higher altitudes.
