Nonlinear instability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007580
Instability in which a disturbance of sufficient finite amplitude grows even though the system is stable to infinitesimal perturbations, so stability depends on the size of the disturbance. In numerical models the term also names the growth of spurious short waves through aliasing in the nonlinear terms, which makes a calculation blow up unless it is damped or filtered.
