Northeast trades
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007614
Persistent wind systems that blow from the northeast in the Northern Hemisphere's tropical and subtropical regions. These winds are part of the Hadley cell circulation, driven by the Coriolis effect acting on air flowing from the subtropical high-pressure belts towards the Intertropical Convergence Zone. They were historically relied upon by sailing ships for westward travel across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
