Trade

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009738

  1. The steady easterly winds of the tropics, blowing from the subtropical high-pressure belts toward the equatorial low-pressure zone. The Coriolis deflection turns them to blow from the northeast in the Northern Hemisphere and from the southeast in the Southern Hemisphere. The English name comes from an old sense of trade meaning a track or regular course, so trade winds are winds that blow steadily along the same course.

  2. A colloquial and historical abbreviation for the trade winds, which are steady easterly surface winds found in the tropical and subtropical regions. These winds are a manifestation of the global atmospheric circulation, specifically the lower branch of the Hadley cell. They were historically relied upon by sailing vessels for transoceanic travel.
