Parcel method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007801

A conceptual tool used to analyze atmospheric stability by considering the vertical displacement of an imaginary air parcel. The parcel is assumed to move adiabatically, meaning it does not exchange heat or mass with its surroundings. Comparing the parcel's temperature to the ambient environmental temperature at each level determines whether the atmosphere is stable, unstable, or neutrally stable.
