Adiabatically enclosed system

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003302

A thermodynamic system that does not exchange heat or mass with its surroundings. Any changes in temperature within such a system are solely due to work done on or by the system, such as expansion or compression. In atmospheric science, a parcel of air rising or sinking rapidly can be approximated as an adiabatically enclosed system, leading to cooling upon ascent and warming upon descent.
