Planck's radiation law

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007959

A formula from quantum mechanics that gives the spectral radiance of a black body as a function of its temperature and the radiation's frequency or wavelength. It accurately models the electromagnetic energy emitted at thermal equilibrium across the entire spectrum, resolving the ultraviolet catastrophe predicted by classical physics. The law is foundational to remote sensing, as it relates the measured radiance from an object like a cloud or the Earth's surface to its temperature.
