Radio direction finding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008322
A technique for determining the direction to a radio-frequency source by measuring the angle of arrival of its transmitted waves. In meteorology, it is used to track the movement of radiosondes for upper-air wind profiling and to locate lightning discharges in thunderstorm detection networks. Directional antennas are rotated or used in arrays to find the bearing with the maximum signal strength, thereby pinpointing the source's azimuth.
