VHF source
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010837
A discrete location within a thunderstorm that emits radio waves in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band, from 30 to 300 megahertz. These emissions are produced by the electrical breakdown processes that form a lightning discharge, such as the propagation of leaders. Networks of ground-based sensors, known as lightning mapping arrays, detect these signals to create three-dimensional maps of lightning channel development inside clouds over time.
