Saharan air layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008631
A mass of very dry, dusty air that forms over the Sahara Desert and moves westward over the Atlantic Ocean. This layer is characterized by high temperatures, low humidity, and a strong temperature inversion at its base, which suppresses convection. Its presence can inhibit tropical cyclone development by introducing dry air into the storm environment and increasing wind shear.
