Savart polariscope
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008668
An instrument for detecting polarized light and determining its plane of polarization, particularly in the context of skylight analysis. It consists of two birefringent crystal plates, cut at an angle to their optic axes and cemented together with their principal sections at right angles. When linearly polarized light enters the device, it produces a set of straight, parallel, colored interference fringes whose orientation reveals the plane of polarization, with fringe spacing being inversely proportional to the angle of incidence.
