Polarization

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008042

The orientation of the oscillations of a transverse wave, such as electromagnetic radiation, in a specific plane. In atmospheric optics, sunlight becomes partially polarized upon scattering by air molecules and aerosols, leading to phenomena like the polarization of the sky. Radar systems can transmit and receive signals with specific polarizations to infer properties of hydrometeors.
