Polarizability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008041
A measure of how easily the electron cloud of an atom or molecule can be distorted by an external electric field, inducing an electric dipole moment. This property influences the refractive index of air and the scattering of electromagnetic radiation by atmospheric particles. Water vapor molecules exhibit a higher polarizability compared to dry air components like nitrogen and oxygen.
