Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010676

An optical instrument designed to measure the polarization properties of light. In atmospheric science, polariscopes are used to analyze sunlight or artificial light that has been scattered by air molecules, aerosols, or cloud particles. By determining the degree and orientation of polarization, researchers can infer physical properties of atmospheric constituents, such as particle size, shape, and refractive index, which are difficult to measure directly.
