Degree of polarization

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004905

A measure of the extent to which light waves oscillate in a preferred direction rather than randomly. It quantifies the fraction of the total light intensity that is polarized, ranging from zero for unpolarized light to one for fully polarized light. This property is used in remote sensing to analyze atmospheric aerosols and cloud properties.
