Scavenging by precipitation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008696
The process by which atmospheric aerosols, gases, and other pollutants are removed from the atmosphere by falling precipitation, such as rain, snow, or hail. This removal can occur through in-cloud scavenging, where pollutants are incorporated into cloud droplets, or below-cloud scavenging, where falling precipitation collects particles and gases. It is a major natural cleansing mechanism for the atmosphere.
