Scofield-Oliver technique
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010740
A method used to estimate rainfall rates and amounts from satellite infrared imagery, particularly for convective storms. It relies on analyzing the temperature and growth rate of cloud tops, with colder and rapidly expanding cloud tops indicating more intense rainfall. This technique is widely applied in regions with sparse ground-based radar or rain gauge networks for flash flood forecasting.
