Side-scanning sonar

An acoustic imaging system used to create detailed images of the seafloor and submerged objects. It emits sound pulses sideways from a towed or hull-mounted transducer and records the intensity of the backscattered sound. This technology is used in oceanography for mapping seabed topography, identifying geological features, and locating wrecks.
